Chop Chop Inc. Ducks — All 7, the Reward Question & the Duck Book

The ducks were not a joke that got dropped at launch. They were a joke that got a book deal. Three days after release, NullRef published an official paid short story titled “Ducks, Dollars and Dark Beginnings.” The ducks are in the title. Our pre-launch page said any team that writes “watch out for the ducks” on its own store page is planning something. We would like our vindication in writing.

The reward question (still open, now with receipts)

This is the one thing we expected launch to settle, and it didn’t. Five days in, third-party guides split cleanly:

• One camp calls the ducks purely cosmetic collectibles with no mechanical payoff.
• Another claims they feed exploration achievements or bonus payouts.

Both are written confidently. Neither shows proof. The game has 21 Steam achievements and we can account for exploration ones like “You found our secret base” — but we have not seen a duck-specific achievement confirmed by anyone who actually holds it.

Our position: collect them because they’re funny and they’re placed in interesting corners, not because a payout is promised. If you have a screenshot of an all-seven payoff, the footer contact works and we’ll credit you.

Where they hide (mechanics, not coordinates)

We’re deliberately not publishing seven fake waypoints. What release-build players consistently report is placement logic, which travels better than landmarks anyway:

1. Near your own infrastructure. Ducks turn up around wood processing equipment and storage buffers — the places you walk past a hundred times and never look at.
2. At the extremes of a new zone. When an area unlocks, they tend to sit either right at the entrance or at the farthest dead end. Rarely the middle.
3. Behind and above things. Alleys, building backs, and spots that need a bit of platforming or cave-poking.
4. In the secret dev room. At least one guide reports ducks stashed inside, which would be extremely on-brand for a team that also hid a QR code in there — and then patched it out in hotfix #4 for being faulty.

• The knife emoji on the store page continues to do enormous narrative work.
• “Dark Beginnings” implies the ducks have an origin story. An origin story implies intent. Intent implies the shotguns are canon.
• A studio that names its first paid add-on after the ducks is not finished with the ducks.
